Strip Coil Orders: Confirm Uncoiler Compatibility Before Buying

A practical coil-handling review for strip buyers: inside diameter, outside diameter, coil weight, winding orientation and receiving records.

Strip Coil Orders: Confirm Uncoiler Compatibility Before Buying

· Hangbo Group

Will the strip coil you order actually fit the receiving production line? A purchase specification can describe the right alloy, thickness and width yet leave this question unanswered. Before approving an order, ask the receiving workshop to confirm a separate coil-handling sheet. The recommendations below concern delivery configuration; they do not replace material acceptance requirements or the equipment manufacturer's operating instructions.

Separate the metal specification from the machine interface

Keep two approvals visible. The material review covers the exact grade, applicable product specification, condition, dimensions and inspection records. The handling review covers how each coil will be supported, loaded and unwound. Passing one review does not establish the other.

ASTM identifies B906 as a general-requirements specification for flat-rolled nickel and nickel-alloy plate, sheet and strip. Whether it applies to a particular order must be established from the specified product standard and purchase documents. It is not a substitute for a receiving-machine compatibility review. Use the edition required by the project rather than assuming that a catalogue reference authorizes a change.

Ask the workshop for limits, not a preferred coil photograph

Ulbrich's strip-coil product information identifies coil inner diameter, size, support and accumulation method among final-processing characteristics. This supports treating coil configuration as a defined procurement input. The following table is our suggested review sheet, not a list of universal industry limits.

Input from receiving workshopSupplier confirmation to request
Mandrel expansion range and acceptable core arrangementProposed coil inside diameter, tolerance and core details
Maximum permissible coil outside diameterMaximum delivered outside diameter, including any relevant wrapping allowance
Equipment and handling weight limitsNet weight range per coil, maximum gross handling-unit weight and coil count
Feed path and required presentationUnwinding arrangement shown on an agreed sketch
Restrictions on joints and interruptionsWhether joints are proposed, their identification and approval requirements

Define direction using a view, not just a word

“Clockwise” is ambiguous unless both parties use the same viewing position. Attach a sketch that identifies the operator's viewing side, strip exit position and the surface intended to face the tooling. If edge orientation matters, identify it on the same sketch. Have the supplier return the marked sketch with the quotation or technical acknowledgement.

Specify the requested winding configuration explicitly. A proposal to change from individual flat coils to traverse-wound packaging should be reviewed by the receiving workshop. Ask for the proposed spool or core drawing and handling details before accepting an unfamiliar configuration. Do not infer suitability from the total order weight.

Keep total kilograms separate from usable delivery units

An order for 600 kg does not define how that weight may be divided. For illustration only, suppose the workshop confirms a maximum net coil weight of 150 kg. An offer for three 200 kg coils would require revision even though the total is correct. Conversely, many small coils may meet a weight ceiling while creating an unacceptable number of planned changeovers. Agree both the maximum and the acceptable distribution, and let the workshop decide any minimum usable length.

If continuous length is critical, state the requirement directly and ask the supplier to identify any proposed joints or breaks. Do not calculate a guaranteed usable length from nominal weight alone. Ask how length will be stated or verified when it forms part of acceptance.

Make the packing list useful at goods receipt

Request a unique coil identifier linked to the agreed material records, together with net weight and the configuration fields needed for receipt. Keep material heat identification distinct from an individual coil identifier. The buyer should be able to select the correct coil without opening every package or treating a pallet total as a coil weight.

Before dispatch, review a packing-list draft against the approved handling sheet. Where important details remain unclear, request a photograph with a visible coil identifier and a scale reference. Photographs supplement the agreed records; they do not certify grade or replace dimensional checks.

A short clause for the next enquiry

Suggested purchasing wording: “Please confirm the proposed inside diameter, maximum outside diameter, net weight range per coil, core arrangement and unwinding sketch against the attached receiving-equipment limits. Identify all exceptions separately before order acceptance. No change to material grade, condition or agreed winding configuration without written approval.”

For a strip supply enquiry, attach the material item list and workshop handling sheet to the Hangbo quotation form. Serena can coordinate clarification of the proposed delivery configuration. The cover photograph illustrates strip product form and does not identify a certified grade.
