Creep Strength and High-Temperature Oxidation

Inconel 617 combines solid-solution strengthening with cobalt and molybdenum to deliver the highest creep-rupture strength among the common solid-solution nickel superalloys in the 700–950 °C band.

TemperatureStress for 100 000 h rupture
650 °C≈ 190 MPa
750 °C≈ 100 MPa
850 °C≈ 50 MPa
950 °C≈ 20 MPa
Oxidation limit≈ 1100 °C

It is the baseline material for advanced-ultra-supercritical boiler tubing, gas-turbine combustor hardware and high-temperature heat exchangers. See creep and stress rupture for how to read these curves.

Fabrication, Welding and Heat Treatment

  • Solution anneal at 1150–1200 °C and rapid cool; hot work between 1200 °C and 950 °C.
  • Weld with ERNiCrCoMo-1 matching filler for creep-critical joints; ERNiCr-3 is acceptable for lower-temperature attachments.
  • Preheat is not required for thin sections; use 150–200 °C on heavy sections and keep interpass below 200 °C.
  • Post-weld heat treatment is not normally needed, but a 1150 °C anneal restores optimum creep properties after heavy welding.
  • Machine annealed with carbide tools; the alloy work-hardens, so maintain a continuous cut — see our machining guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the practical temperature ceiling for Inconel 617?

Around 1100 °C for oxidation resistance. For load-bearing parts, design is limited by creep: above roughly 950 °C the allowable stress falls to a level where thicker sections or a different alloy is usually more economical.

How does 617 compare with Inconel 625?

617 is stronger and more oxidation-resistant above 700 °C. 625 has better aqueous corrosion resistance and is easier to weld. Furnace and turbine hot-section work favours 617; chemical process equipment favours 625.

Is it approved for nuclear or ASME code work?

Yes — 617 is covered by ASME Section III for high-temperature nuclear applications and by Section I / VIII for boiler and pressure-vessel service. Hangbo supplies with full traceability.

What is the chemical composition of Inconel 617?

UNS N06617 / W.Nr. 2.4663a: 44.5% min nickel, 20-24% chromium, 10-15% cobalt, 8-10% molybdenum and 0.8-1.5% aluminum. Chromium, aluminum and cobalt combine for oxidation and high-temperature strength.

What gives 617 its high-temperature strength?

Solid-solution strengthening from cobalt and molybdenum plus a protective chromium-aluminum oxide scale, giving useful strength and oxidation resistance to about 1200 °C.

What are its mechanical properties?

Tensile about 740 MPa, yield about 310 MPa and 48% elongation at room temperature in the solution-annealed condition.

What applications suit Inconel 617?

Gas-turbine combustion hardware, industrial furnace components and high-temperature gas-cooled reactor (HTGR) parts where creep and oxidation resistance are required.

Is Inconel 617 hard to weld?

It is weldable with matching ERNiCrCoMo-1 filler; solution annealing after welding restores corrosion resistance. Load-bearing parts above roughly 950 °C are creep-limited.

How is 617 supplied?

As round bar, plate, sheet, tube, forgings and wire, with full mill test certification and traceability.
