Overview

Haynes 230 (UNS N06230 / W.Nr. 2.4733) is a nickel-chromium-tungsten-molybdenum alloy with excellent high-temperature strength and oxidation resistance up to 1149°C. The tungsten addition provides solid-solution strengthening while chromium and lanthanum enhance oxidation resistance.

Corrosion Resistance

Outstanding oxidation resistance up to 1149°C, superior to many competing alloys. Excellent resistance to nitridation and carburization. Good resistance to molten salts. The lanthanum addition improves scale adhesion and spalling resistance under thermal cycling.

Applications

The unique combination of properties makes Haynes 230 suitable for a wide range of demanding applications:

  • Gas Turbines: Combustion chambers, liners, and transition ducts.
  • Industrial Furnaces: High-temperature furnace components and fixtures.
  • Heat Exchangers: High-temperature heat exchanger tubing.
  • Nuclear: Components for very high-temperature gas-cooled reactors.
  • Chemical Processing: Catalyst support grids and high-temperature reaction vessels.

Available Product Forms

Hangbo Alloy Group manufactures and supplies Haynes 230 in the following product forms, conforming to ASTM, AMS, and ASME specifications:

  • Round Bars: Diameters from 6 mm to 300 mm, hot-finished or cold-drawn, solution annealed.
  • Seamless Tubes & Pipes: Sizes from 6 mm OD to 219 mm OD, various wall thicknesses.
  • Plates & Sheets: Thicknesses from 0.5 mm to 50 mm, hot-rolled or cold-rolled.
  • Forgings: Custom flanges, rings, discs, and complex shapes per customer drawing.
  • Welding Wire: Diameters 0.8 mm to 5.0 mm, precision-wound coils and spools.

Elevated-Temperature Strength and Oxidation

Haynes 230 is chosen when a component must carry load and resist oxidation simultaneously well above the range of stainless steels. The lanthanum addition is what gives its oxide scale the adhesion to survive thermal cycling.

For long-term duty, design against the creep and stress-rupture envelope rather than short-time tensile data — 230 retains useful rupture strength to about 980 °C.

Fabrication, Welding and Machining Guidance

  • Hot work between 1175 °C and 950 °C; finish above 950 °C then solution anneal at 1175–1240 °C.
  • Weld by GTAW or GMAW using Haynes 230-W filler (AWS A5.14 ERNiCrWMo-1) for matching creep strength.
  • No preheat is normally required; keep interpass temperature below 150 °C.
  • Post-weld solution annealing is not mandatory for most service, but improves ductility in thick sections.
  • Machine in the annealed condition with carbide tools, low speeds and continuous cut — see our nickel alloy machining guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the maximum service temperature for Haynes 230?

Around 1150 °C for oxidation-limited continuous service. Where the part is load-bearing, the practical ceiling is lower — roughly 980 °C — because creep, not oxidation, becomes the limiting factor.

Is Haynes 230 better than Inconel 617 for furnace parts?

230 has superior oxidation resistance and thermal stability; 617 has higher creep-rupture strength in the 700–900 °C band. Choose 230 for thin-section fixtures and 617 for heavily loaded components.

Does it need post-weld heat treatment?

Usually not. Stress relief at 900–1000 °C is only specified for thick sections or where dimensional stability during subsequent high-temperature service is critical.

What is the chemical composition of Haynes 230?

UNS N06230 / W.Nr. 2.4733: nickel balance, 20-24% chromium, 13-15% tungsten, 1-3% molybdenum, up to 5% cobalt, and a small 0.005-0.05% lanthanum addition that improves oxide-scale adhesion.

What gives Haynes 230 its oxidation resistance?

Chromium forms a protective oxide while the lanthanum addition improves scale adhesion under thermal cycling, so the alloy resists spalling up to about 1149 °C.

What are its mechanical properties?

Tensile about 860 MPa, yield about 390 MPa and 48% elongation in the solution-annealed condition.

What standards cover Haynes 230?

UNS N06230 and W.Nr. 2.4733, supplied to the relevant ASTM/AMS product specifications for bar, plate, sheet and tube.

What are typical applications?

Gas-turbine combustors and liners, industrial furnace hardware and heat-treatment fixtures needing high-temperature strength plus oxidation and nitridation resistance.

How is Haynes 230 supplied?

Round bar, plate, sheet, strip, tube and forgings, with mill certificates and third-party inspection available.
