1. Introduction: Why Monel 60 / ENiCu-2?

Monel 60 is a nickel-copper welding consumable for joining the Monel family of alloys — principally Monel 400 (UNS N04400), Monel R-405, and Monel K-500. As a covered electrode it is classified AWS A5.11 ENiCu-2 (SMAW), and as a bare wire/rod it is classified AWS A5.14 ERNiCu-7 (RMonel 60; GTAW/GMAW/SAW). Both forms share the same base UNS designation N04060 and Werkstoff number 2.4377 (NiCu30MnTi).

The deposited weld metal of Monel 60 has chemical and corrosion characteristics essentially equivalent to Monel 400 base metal: a nickel-copper solid-solution alloy with about 30% copper and low iron. This gives it excellent resistance to seawater, salt solutions, alkalis, and many non-oxidizing acids, combined with good strength and ductility from cryogenic temperatures up to about 425°C (800°F). Because the deposit is slightly magnetic and tougher than pure-nickel or stainless weld metals, Monel 60 is the standard choice for Monel fabrication and for corrosion-resistant cladding of steel in marine, offshore, chemical, and food-processing equipment.

Hangbo Alloy Group supplies Monel 60 as ENiCu-2 covered electrodes, ERNiCu-7 TIG rods, MIG wire, and SAW wire — all with full AWS/ASME certification and traceability for critical marine and chemical service.

2. Chemical Composition

The chemical composition of Monel 60 / ENiCu-2 is controlled by AWS A5.11 to produce a Monel-type weld deposit (nickel-copper with low iron). The matching bare wire ERNiCu-7 (RMonel 60) has a similar analysis with slightly different titanium/niobium limits.

ElementAWS A5.11 ENiCu-2 Range (wt%)Typical ValueRole in the Weld Deposit
Nickel (Ni)62.0 – 69.0~65Austenitic matrix; corrosion resistance; toughness
Copper (Cu)Remainder~30Monel-type corrosion resistance; strength
Iron (Fe)≤ 2.51.0Controlled low for maximum corrosion resistance
Manganese (Mn)≤ 4.03.0Deoxidation; fluidity; porosity control
Titanium (Ti)≤ 1.50.4Deoxidation; grain refinement (ERNiCu-7: 1.5-3.0)
Niobium + Tantalum (Nb+Ta)≤ 2.50.2Carbide stabilization (ERNiCu-7: ≤0.5)
Aluminum (Al)≤ 1.250.05Deoxidation
Carbon (C)≤ 0.150.02Controlled low level to preserve corrosion resistance
Silicon (Si)≤ 1.251.0Deoxidation; controlled to limit cracking
Phosphorus (P)≤ 0.0200.010Impurity control for ductility
Sulfur (S)≤ 0.0150.008Impurity control for hot cracking resistance

Key compositional insight: The iron content is deliberately kept low (≤2.5%), because iron reduces the corrosion resistance of the nickel-copper deposit in seawater and acids. The ~30% copper balance gives Monel 60 its characteristic combination of seawater/acid resistance and good machinability of the as-welded deposit.

3. Physical Properties

Physical properties of the Monel 60 deposit are similar to those of Monel 400 base metal. Values below are typical and may vary slightly with exact composition and welding process.

4. Mechanical Properties

4.1 Typical All-Weld-Metal Tensile Properties (As-Welded)

PropertyTypical ValueAWS A5.11 Minimum
Tensile Strength (Rm)480 – 550 MPa≥ 480 MPa (70 ksi)
Yield Strength (Rp0.2)240 – 300 MPa—
Elongation (A)30 – 35%≥ 30%
Hardness140 – 180 HB—

Note: The AWS A5.11 / ASME minimum for the ENiCu-2 deposit is about 480 MPa (70 ksi) tensile strength and 30% elongation. Actual values depend on welding process, heat input, shielding gas, and dilution from base metal. Monel 60 weld metal is not age-hardenable — unlike Monel K-500 base metal, it cannot be precipitation-strengthened.

4.2 Elevated-Temperature Performance

The Monel 60 weld deposit retains useful strength and toughness down to cryogenic temperatures but is limited at the high end. Its recommended continuous service temperature is generally up to about 425°C (800°F). Above this range, strength falls off and oxidation resistance is inferior to nickel-chromium fillers such as the Inconel family. For elevated-temperature oxidation and creep service, an Inconel or Incoloy filler should be specified instead.

5. Welding Characteristics & Fabrication

5.1 Welding Processes

  • SMAW (Covered Electrode): ENiCu-2 electrodes are the most common manual form, used for Monel fabrication, repair, and field/out-of-position welding. Use DCEP polarity.
  • GTAW (TIG): ERNiCu-7 rods for root passes, thin-wall tubing, and high-purity Monel joints. Use DCEN polarity with argon shielding.
  • GMAW (MIG): ERNiCu-7 wire for thicker-section production welding; pulsed-spray or short-arc transfer with argon/argon-helium shielding.
  • SAW (Submerged Arc): ERNiCu-7 wire for heavy-section fabrication and large corrosion-resistant overlays on steel, matched with suitable flux.

5.3 Crack & Porosity Control

Monel 60 has good crack resistance in the as-welded condition due to its ductile nickel-copper deposit. The main welding concerns are:

  • Porosity if the joint or filler is contaminated with oil, moisture, sulfur, lead, or phosphorus — maintain clean joint preparation and dry electrodes.
  • Hot cracking / fusion-line cracking if dilution from carbon steel introduces excessive iron or carbon — control heat input and use a buttering/transition layer on thick steel.
  • Monel 60 is not age-hardenable and does not require post-weld heat treatment.

6. Corrosion Resistance

The nickel-copper deposit of Monel 60 has corrosion resistance essentially equivalent to Monel 400 base metal:

  • Seawater and salt solutions: Excellent resistance — the primary reason for selecting Monel in marine and offshore service.
  • Alkaline / caustic environments: Good resistance to caustic soda and alkaline salt solutions.
  • Non-oxidizing acids: Good resistance to hydrochloric and sulfuric acid at moderate concentrations and temperatures.
  • Stress-corrosion cracking: Monel 60 is resistant to chloride stress-corrosion cracking that attacks austenitic stainless steels.
  • Limitations: NOT recommended for strongly oxidizing acids (e.g., nitric acid) or strongly oxidizing high-temperature gases — nickel-chromium fillers such as Inconel should be used instead. Service temperature is generally limited to ~425°C (800°F).

Primary applications include welding Monel 400, R-405, and K-500 to themselves; joining Monel to stainless steel or carbon steel; corrosion-resistant overlay/cladding of steel with a Monel-type layer; and fabrication of heat exchangers, pressure vessels, pumps, valves, and marine/offshore components in seawater, caustic, and non-oxidizing acid service.

Q7: What is the difference between Monel 60 (ENiCu-2) and ERNiCu-7?

Monel 60 is the trade/industry name. As a covered electrode it is AWS A5.11 ENiCu-2 (SMAW); as a bare wire/rod it is AWS A5.14 ERNiCu-7 (RMonel 60; GTAW/GMAW/SAW). Both share UNS N04060 and W.Nr 2.4377 and produce essentially the same Monel-type deposit. The difference is product form and process; the covered electrode is for manual/repair work, the bare wire for automated or high-purity welds. The wire (ERNiCu-7) typically has slightly higher titanium (1.5-3.0%) and lower niobium than ENiCu-2.

Q8: What welding parameters are recommended for Monel 60 electrodes?

For SMAW with ENiCu-2, use DCEP (reverse) polarity, a short arc, and low-to-moderate current: 2.5 mm ~45-70 A, 3.15 mm ~80-100 A, 4.0 mm ~90-130 A. Redry electrodes at 250-300°C for at least 1 hour. For GTAW use DCEN with argon; for GMAW use pulsed-spray or short-arc with argon/argon-helium. Keep interpass below ~150°C; preheat is generally not required on Monel.

Q9: What product forms are available for Monel 60?

Hangbo Alloy supplies Monel 60 as ENiCu-2 covered electrodes (2.5-5.0 mm), ERNiCu-7 TIG rods (1.0-3.2 mm, 915/1000 mm lengths), MIG wire on spools (0.8-1.6 mm), and SAW wire (2.0-4.0 mm). All forms can be supplied with AWS/ASME certification and full traceability.

Q10: What is the price and lead time for Monel 60?

Monel 60 is a well-established nickel-copper filler. Typical pricing is $35-75/kg depending on product form, diameter, certification level, and current nickel/copper markets. Lead times range from 2-6 weeks for standard sizes and 5-10 weeks for certified lots with full traceability. Contact serena@hangboalloy.com for a competitive quote.

Q11: Is Monel 60 resistant to corrosion?

Yes. The nickel-copper deposit has corrosion resistance equivalent to Monel 400: excellent in seawater and salt solutions, good in alkaline/caustic environments and many non-oxidizing mineral acids (HCl, H₂SO₄ at moderate conditions), and resistant to chloride stress-corrosion cracking. It is not recommended for strongly oxidizing acids (e.g., nitric acid) or strongly oxidizing high-temperature gases. Service is generally limited to ~425°C (800°F).

Q12: Can Monel 60 be used for dissimilar metal welding and cladding?

Yes. Monel 60 is commonly used to join Monel to stainless steel or carbon steel, and to overlay (clad) carbon and low-alloy steel with a corrosion-resistant Monel-type layer for seawater, chemical, and food-processing equipment. Because Monel is slightly magnetic with a different thermal expansion than steel, moderate heat input and controlled dilution (a buttering/transition layer) are recommended on thick carbon steel.

Q13: Is Monel 60 weld metal prone to cracking or porosity?

Monel 60 has good crack resistance due to its ductile nickel-copper deposit. The main concerns are porosity from contamination (oil, moisture, sulfur, lead, phosphorus) and hot cracking if carbon-steel dilution adds excessive iron/carbon at the fusion line. Use clean joint prep, dry electrodes (redried 250-300°C), proper shielding gas, and moderate heat input. Monel 60 is not age-hardenable and needs no post-weld heat treatment.

Q14: What is the maximum service temperature for Monel 60 weld metal?

Monel 60 weld metal is suitable for continuous service up to about 425°C (800°F). Above this, strength decreases and oxidation resistance is inferior to nickel-chromium fillers such as the Inconel family. For elevated-temperature oxidation and creep service, select an Inconel or Incoloy filler. Monel 60 remains fully useful at cryogenic and sub-zero temperatures, retaining good toughness.
