Why Choose Inconel 617 Welding Wire

  • Cobalt and molybdenum solid-solution strengthening deliver excellent creep-rupture strength above 800°C.
  • High chromium plus aluminium form a protective oxide scale, giving outstanding oxidation and carburisation resistance to 1100°C.
  • Retains metallurgical stability and ductility after long-term thermal exposure.
  • Widely qualified for advanced ultra-supercritical (A-USC) power plant and gas turbine hot-section components.

Welding Best Practices

Follow these practical guidelines to obtain sound, corrosion-resistant welds with this filler metal:

  • Preheat is generally not required, but heavy sections benefit from 100–150°C to remove moisture.
  • Maintain interpass temperature below 200°C (390°F) to limit grain growth in the HAZ.
  • Use argon shielding with a trailing shield; the aluminium content makes the puddle sensitive to oxidation.
  • For thick sections, use a controlled low heat input (0.8 – 1.8 kJ/mm) and multi-pass stringer technique.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Inconel 617 welding wire used for?

It is the standard filler for Inconel 617 base metal in gas turbine transition ducts, combustion cans, high-temperature heat exchangers and A-USC boiler tubing operating up to about 1100°C.

Can ERNiCrCoMo-1 join dissimilar metals?

Yes, it is used for dissimilar joints between nickel alloys and heat-resistant steels where high-temperature creep strength is required. See Inconel 617 high-temperature properties.

Is post-weld heat treatment recommended?

Usually not. The alloy is designed for as-welded service; PWHT is only applied when the governing design code calls for stress relief.

What is the chemical composition of Inconel 117 wire?

AWS ERNiCrCoMo-1 / UNS N06617: nickel balance with about 20-24% chromium, 10-15% cobalt and 8-10% molybdenum, matching Inconel 617.

Which base metals use this filler?

Inconel 617 components, gas-turbine combustion hardware and high-temperature furnace equipment.

What standards cover this filler?

AWS A5.14 (ERNiCrCoMo-1), ISO/EN 18274 (S Ni 6617) and ASME SFA-5.14.

What is the service temperature?

The deposited metal retains strength and oxidation resistance up to about 1200 °C.

What diameters and forms are available?

TIG wire 1.6-3.2 mm, MIG spools 0.8-1.6 mm and SAW coils 2.4-4.0 mm.

What shielding gas is used?

Pure argon for GTAW; argon with helium or CO2 additions for GMAW.
