Why Choose Inconel 92 Welding Wire

  • Manganese and niobium work together to give excellent resistance to hot cracking and microfissuring.
  • Purpose-designed for dissimilar welding of nickel alloys to carbon and low-alloy steels.
  • Tolerates high iron dilution from the steel side without forming brittle phases.
  • Long-standing nuclear-qualified filler for reactor pressure vessel dissimilar metal welds.

Welding Best Practices

Follow these practical guidelines to obtain sound, corrosion-resistant welds with this filler metal:

  • Apply a buttering layer on the steel side when dilution exceeds roughly 30%.
  • Keep interpass temperature below 175°C (350°F); preheat carbon steel per its own procedure.
  • Use DCEN polarity for GTAW with high-purity argon shielding.
  • Peen or use low-restraint sequencing on highly restrained joints to relieve shrinkage stress.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Inconel 82 and Inconel 92 wire?

Inconel 82 (ERNiCr-3) has higher chromium and no intentional iron; Inconel 92 (ERNiCrFe-6) contains 8–12% iron plus manganese, improving hot-cracking resistance and tolerance of steel dilution in dissimilar joints. Compare with our Inconel 82 welding wire page.

Is Inconel 92 approved for nuclear work?

Yes, ERNiCrFe-6 has decades of service in nuclear dissimilar metal welds and is covered by ASME Section IX and Section III rules.

Which processes can use this wire?

GTAW (TIG), GMAW (MIG) and SAW are all used; Hangbo Alloy Group supplies matching TIG cut lengths, spools and coils.

What is the chemical composition of Inconel 92 wire?

AWS ERNiCrFe-6 / UNS N06092: 67% min nickel, 14-17% chromium and iron balance, giving good strength and oxidation resistance at elevated temperature.

Which base metals use Inconel 92 filler?

Inconel 600 and 601 components, plus dissimilar joints between nickel alloys and stainless steels.

What standards cover this filler?

AWS A5.14 (ERNiCrFe-6), ISO/EN 18274 (S Ni 6092) and DIN 1736 (SG-NiCr15FeMn).

What diameters and forms are available?

TIG wire 1.6-3.2 mm, MIG spools 0.8-1.6 mm and SAW coils 2.4-4.0 mm.

What shielding gas is used?

Pure argon for GTAW; argon with 2% helium or CO2 for GMAW.

What applications does it serve?

Furnace and heat-treatment components, boiler/superheater welding, and corrosion-resistant process equipment.
