Why Choose Inconel 82 Welding Wire

  • The industry-standard filler for dissimilar welding between nickel alloys and carbon or stainless steels.
  • Manganese and niobium provide strong resistance to hot cracking and weld metal microfissuring.
  • Retains oxidation resistance and creep strength at elevated temperature.
  • Extensively qualified for nuclear, petrochemical and power generation service.

Welding Best Practices

Follow these practical guidelines to obtain sound, corrosion-resistant welds with this filler metal:

  • Buttering the steel face is recommended when dilution is expected to exceed about 30%.
  • Keep interpass temperature below 175°C (350°F); preheat only per the steel base-metal procedure.
  • Use high-purity argon shielding with a gas lens; avoid excessive arc length.
  • Remove oxides between passes with a dedicated stainless brush used only for nickel alloys.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Inconel 82 weld Inconel 600 and 601?

Yes. ERNiCr-3 is the matching filler for Inconel 600 and 601, and is also used for Inconel 690 in many applications.

How does Inconel 82 compare with Inconel 92?

Inconel 92 (ERNiCrFe-6) adds iron and manganese, improving hot-cracking resistance where steel dilution is high. See our Inconel 92 welding wire page.

Is it suitable for nuclear applications?

Yes. Alloy 82/182 weld metals have decades of nuclear service, though newer high-chromium fillers such as Inconel 52M are now preferred where PWSCC resistance is critical.

What is the chemical composition of Inconel 82 wire?

AWS ERNiCr-3 / UNS N06082: 67% min nickel, 18-22% chromium, with niobium for stabilization, iron balance.

Which base metals use ERNiCr-3 filler?

Inconel 600, 601 and 690, plus dissimilar welds between nickel alloys and carbon or stainless steels.

What standards cover this filler?

AWS A5.14 (ERNiCr-3), ISO/EN 18274 (S Ni 6082) and DIN 1736 (SG-NiCr20Mn3Nb).

What diameters and forms are available?

TIG wire 1.6-3.2 mm, MIG spools 0.8-1.6 mm and SAW coils 2.4-4.0 mm.

What shielding gas is used?

Pure argon for GTAW; argon with helium or CO2 additions for GMAW.

What applications does it serve?

Nuclear reactor components, weld overlay on steels, and furnace/fixture welding.
